Special foot care needs.
When it comes to patients
with special foot care needs, every situation requires the
right prescription. With
diabetes on the rise around the world, the special foot care needs of
people are coming front and
centre. According to the American Diabetes Association,
out
of 18.2 million people in the U.S.
6.3% of them have diabetes. There are also an
estimated 13 million people
who are diagnosed and 5.2 million who are not. The
number of people under the
age of 20 with diabetes is about 210,000 in the United States
alone. This encompasses 0.26%
of all people in this age group. Plus, according to
clinic-based reports and
regional studies, Type 2 diabetes is becoming much more
common with Native
Americans/American Indians, African Americans, Hispanic and
Latino children and
adolescents. With people 20 years or older, out of 18 million people,
8.7% of them have diabetes.
People age 60 or older, out of 8.6 million, 18.3% of them
have diabetes. The numbers
are staggering.
One of the side effects of
diabetes is lesions and some may form on the feet. Ill-fitting
footwear can increase the
chances lesions forming. This is where great care is needed
to ensure that the footwear
fits the foot properly and offers as much customization
opportunities as possible.
With poor fitting footwear, the lesions can become infected
and possible amputations may
be necessary. The importance of proper fitting footwear
could make a difference in a
person's life. Provide your customers with the best with
